The classic small-ship island-hopping route through French Polynesia's most famous lagoons.
Why it works: An overnight stay in Bora Bora — rare for cruise itineraries — gives time for both a sunset sail and a full day of lagoon snorkeling, instead of the single afternoon a big-ship Caribbean-style call would allow.
June through September is the dry season and the most popular time to sail — cooler temperatures, minimal rain, and the clearest lagoon water for snorkeling. September is often cited as the sweet spot with excellent weather and thinner crowds than peak summer.
The South Pacific cyclone season runs roughly November through April. The Society Islands (Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea) sit close enough to the equator that direct hits are uncommon, but the wet season still brings more frequent rain and humidity.
South Pacific sailings are typically small-ship (Paul Gauguin, Windstar) and based in Papeete, Tahiti, with overnight port calls rather than a single day per stop — giving more time for snorkeling and overwater-bungalow day passes than a typical big-ship Caribbean itinerary allows.
