The classic ocean-to-ocean repositioning itinerary through all three lock systems.
Why it works: A once-in-a-lifetime engineering spectacle (the full canal transit) bookended by a genuine port-intensive itinerary, rather than just sea days — Cartagena's walled city alone is worth the cruise.
Mid-December through mid-April is the dry season and the heart of the cruise season — expect the clearest skies and calmest conditions for the transit. Full-transit itineraries are rare outside October–April.
A full transit sails ocean-to-ocean through all three lock systems and Gatun Lake, typically as a 14–16 night one-way repositioning cruise between Florida and California. A partial transit enters the canal, cruises Gatun Lake, and reverses course back out — usually a shorter round-trip Caribbean itinerary.
The locks operate rain or shine, and Panama's tropical climate means brief showers are possible even in the dry season. They're typically short and don't disrupt the transit, which takes 8–10 hours to complete.
