The Roman town buried by Vesuvius, 30 to 40 minutes away on the Circumvesuviana train. Entry is timed and capped each day, and mornings fill first. Allow four to five hours with the trip there and back, and bring water: there’s little shade.

Herculaneum is smaller and easier to see than Pompeii, and often paired with a walk up to the Vesuvius crater. Crater tickets are sold online only, and the path closes in bad weather.
