Greece · Ships call at Santorini, Greece
Santorini is a crescent-shaped caldera left behind by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history. The blue-domed churches and whitewashed houses of Oia and Fira sit on cliffs high above the water. Cruise ships anchor inside the caldera and tender passengers ashore to reach the black-sand beaches, the Bronze Age ruins at Akrotiri, and the island's restaurants.

Ships anchor and tender you to the Old Port below Fira. The cable car takes a few minutes, but the line back down can run over an hour in the afternoon, so head back early. The alternative is about 580 steep steps.

The village most people come to Santorini for. The bus from Fira takes about 20 minutes in light traffic and closer to 40 on busy cruise days, so go early and allow two to three hours.

A boat to Nea Kameni for a short, shadeless hike on the volcano, then a swim to the warm springs. Allow three to five hours.

A Bronze Age town buried by the eruption, about 20 minutes from Fira by road. A visit takes about an hour. Red Beach is nearby.

Wineries in the inland villages pour the local Assyrtiko. Best on a longer port stay.
