Skagway boomed during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, when thousands of prospectors passed through on their way to the Yukon goldfields. The downtown is now a National Historical Park, with restored false-front buildings and rangers in period dress. The White Pass & Yukon Route railway climbs from the waterfront through the mountain passes and above the tree line.
